Microsoft announces Imagine Cup winners; India bags third place in interface design

The Indian arm of software giant Microsoft Corporation on Friday announced the winners of the Imagine Cup, a competition it had organised under its corporate social responsibility programme for students worldwide to develop technologies that help the community.

The worldwide finals of the Imagine Cup 2006 were held at Agra and Delhi from August 6-9, 2006. Students from 100 countries took part in the competition and came out with several interesting technological experiments, which will benefit the society.

Participants were asked to 'imagine a world where technology enables us to live a healthier life'. The idea was to provide students a forum for creative and technological innovations that help humankind. The various teams created a software application using Microsoft technology.

"The biggest social challenge for the world is health care and sanitation, and it has been proved that we can solve big problems through technology, so why not tackle the health sector?" asked Ravi Venkatesan, Chairman, Microsoft Corporation India.

The first prize in the software design category went to Italy's team, Even .ctor, for their project, Hello World. The project aims at improving the relationship between doctor and patient. In the same category, Brazil's Trivial Team came second with vEye (Virtual eye), which helps the visually impaired by giving them information about their surrounding environment. Norway was ranked third in the category.

The Indian team Avenger, comprising Mohit Bhargava and Mitushi Jain, bagged the third price in the interface design for their project, Satellite Imaging and Fabric Technology (SIFT). SIFT is an application that continuously monitors health details of soldiers with the help of special fabrics. Poland occupied the first position in Algorithm, while Canada bagged the first prize in the Short film category.

Commenting on the performance of the participants, Venkatesan said, "They represent the next generation of business and technology leaders, and their creativity and passion are reasons for us all to be optimistic about the future. Also, the content of the various projects demonstrates the power of software to address real-world problems."

Korea will host the Imagine Cup 2007 and the theme would be 'Education through Technology'.
