The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Thursday issued a directive each to Reliance Infocomm and Tata Teleservices Limited on their advertising fixed line telephony services as mobile services.
This directive follows a complaint by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to Trai against Tata Teleservices for avoiding payment of ADC by offering fixed line services as mobile services.
Tata Teleservices advertises its fixed line services, “Walky”, as a mobile service with the slogan: “Walky-Freedom of mobility at landline rates”. Similarly, Reliance Infocomm, too is advertising its fixed line service as a mobile service offered at landline rates, a Trai source said.
In the directive, Trai has asked the two leading fixed line service operators to immediately withdraw these advertisements, which are misleading the consumers.
Meanwhile, clarifying the Tata Teleservices stand on this, Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata told FE, “Tata Group or its companies have no intention to bypass laws. So goes for this case.”
Mr Tata was present at the launch of .IN domain name registrations by the minister of communications and IT Dayanidhi Maran.
Fixed line operators are exempted from paying ADC besides receiving ADC for calls terminating on their networks. The existing ADC rates are between 30 paise to 80 paise (varying with the distance) on domestic long distance calls but with the new ADC regime, ADC rate for all calls will become 30 paise.
