Doordarshan nets over a crore from commissioned programme proposals

With the last date for submitting proposal for commissioned programmes expiring on December 9, Doordashan has made a clean over Rs 1 crore from the processing fee for proposals received under the central commissioning.

According to sources in Doordarshan, the public broadcaster had received about 480 proposals for the DD Bharti channel under the central commissioning. And at Rs 25,000 of processing fee per proposal, Doordarshan nets a cool Rs 1.2 crore.

Actually in the initial stages there was lukewarm response to Doordashan’s scheme for commissioned programmes due to high processing fee and low budget of Rs 3 crore for central commissioning for DD Bharti programme. Infact the Doordarshan empanelled producers association had even represented to the I&B ministry to reduce the processing fee. Though Doordarshan’s authorities did not reduce the processing fee, it extended the last date for submitting proposals by a fortnight. And this move paid rich dividends. On the last day (December 9) itself, Doordarshan is reported to have received close to 150 proposals. There was such a big rush of applicants that Doordarshan had to extend the timing by three hours.

It is however not yet known what was the response from independent TV producers to Doordashan’s scheme for commissioned programmes for regional kendras. Doordarshan had allocated a separate budget of Rs 10 crores for regional kendras and fixed the processing fee of Rs 15,000 per proposal. Meanwhile Doordarshan boses are busy finalizing the guideline for acquiring programmes from outside producers under off-the-shelf acquisition scheme. Doordarshan has earmarked a budget of Rs 11 crore for this. According to Doordarshan DG Dr. S Y Quraishi the advertisement inviting proposals under this scheme will be issued in a weeks time.

On the sponsored programme front DD top brass is elated over the overwhelming response it received from the outside producers. Doordarshan has received abut 150 proposals for DD 1 channel under sponsored category including proposals from celebrity producers like Sanjay Khan, Ramanand Sagar, B R Chopra, Dheeraj Kumar, Neerja Guleri, besides big time prduction houses like Cine Vista for producing mega channel driver programme. Doordarshan is expediting the processing of all these proposals in a run-up to the make over of DD1. These programmes are to be first assessed by the evaluation committee, which in turn will put up its observations before the selection committee that has been upgraded with the inclusion of additional DG as its members.
