Top level shake up in Doordarshan

Doordarshan director general, S.Y. Quraishi has effected a number of changes in the work portfolios of top rung officials to streamline the working of the public broadcaster.

These changes have been made in the backdrop of the recent departure of two senior level DD officials from Doordarshan. Omita Paul, additional director general Doordarshan, handling DD India channel took voluntary retirement last month. Anees Ul Haq, deputy director general Doordarshan handling Audience Research, dance, music and drama had gone to All India Radio in September.As part of the latest shake-up, deputy director general K. Kunhikrishnan has been stripped off his crucial portfolios of DD Sports, DD Bharati Advertisement Publicity and Policy, Features and Documentary Films. He has instead been assigned rather insignificant portfolios of Archives, Parliament Cell, Coordination and Development, Development Communication Division. He has also been made Nodal officer of court cases relating to programme and news wing.

In the post-shake up Doordarshan, K. Talanthanga has emerged as the most powerful deputy director general. He handles National Programming, Sponsored Programming, DD Metro, In house productions, Policy Planning, Coordination and Supervision of postings and transfers of programme staff of Station Directors and below level.

L D Mandloi, deputy director general has been allotted the crucial portfolio of Commercial and Sales, Central Commissioning Unit (CCU), Public Service Broadcasting Trust, (PSBT), Northern Zone Programme Administration, DD and other awards. The allotment of CCU assumes significance because Prasar Bharati Board had recently announced the opening of commissioned programmes on Doordarshan.

Deputy Director General RAP Rao who was earlier handling Kashir Channel has been given additional charge of DD Bharati, Features and Documentary Films, Southern Zone Programme Administration and Music and Dance.

NG Srinvas, deputy director general who was earlier looking after Audience Research, International Relations and Marketing, has been given responsibilities of Sports Channel and matters relating to sports on all channels, HRD, Western Zone Programme Administration, Advertisement and Publicity. Y P Singh, who have been recently elevated to deputy director general has been given the portfolios of DD India, Programme Exchange Unit Coordination of Regional Kendras, Eastern Zone Programme Administration and Programmes Campaigning.

The recent reshuffle in Doordarshan is being seen as part of a series of new initiatives being taken by the new DG S.Y Quraishi to aggressively push up the programme viewership and commercial revenue of the public broadcaster.
