CNBC-TV18’s India Business Leader Awards to salute the best in Indian biz

Stage is set for the best in Indian business to come together and honour the best minds in India Inc with India Business Leader Awards presented by Accenture and CNBC-TV18. The year 2008 has been a difficult year for business across the world. But it is in the trying times that the best minds show their brightest side. The year would be remembered as the one that exposed the flaws in corporate affairs, but also highlighted the best business leaders who steered their companies through the most difficult times and situations.

To honour those who have set shining examples in business leadership, CNBC-TV18 is presenting the 4th India Business Leaders Awards on January 22. Based on CNBC Asia Business Leader Awards that recognise the best corporate leaders, the Indian Business Leader Awards are, today, the most definitive awards in business excellence in India.

Some of dignitaries who will be present for the award ceremony include Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan; Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi; Union Minister of Commerce and Industries Kamal Nath; Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and MD, Reliance Industries Ltd; Atul Punj, Chairman, Punj Lloyd Group; Ashwin Dani, Managing Director, Asian Paints; S Ramadorai, CEO and MD, Tata Consultancy Services; Uday Kotak, Vice Chairman and MD, Kotak Mahindra Bank; Ajay Piramal, Chairman, Piramal Group; and Lalit Modi, Vice President, BCCI.

The jury for the awards includes Mukesh Ambani (Chairperson, Jury), Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group; Deepak Parekh, Chairman, HDFC; R Seshasayee, Managing Director, Ashok Leyland; Jagdish Khattar, CMD, Carnation Auto India Pvt Ltd; Raghav Bahl, MD, Network18.

Talking on what makes for an ideal business leader, Ambani said, “A leader has to navigate the path and protect the interests of all the stakeholders in a consistent way so that they can deliver performance on an ongoing basis.” According to Birla, track record was important. Long term viability and sustainability of the business model was also vital. Parekh believed that individual contribution to the company was very important, especially in troubled times like these.

This year, the awards are being conferred on: First Generation Entrepreneur of the Year – Atul Punj, for establishing an enterprise and successfully expanding it overseas in a very short time.

Most Promising Entrant into the Big League – Asian Paints, for being a prominent player, maintaining their market share even in the face of stiff competition through innovative marketing strategies and their recent foray in the industrial sector.

Taking India Abroad! – Naresh Goyal, Jet Airways, for creating India brand image story and maintaining the highest standards in quality of service, punctuality, the flight timeliness, the lounges, the cleanliness of the aircraft and the politeness of the staff.

Outstanding Woman Business Leader of the Year – Chitra Ramkrishna, for creating the one of the greatest institutions of our times and one of the greatest successes that India has had in the post liberalisation regime.

Outstanding Contribution to the Cause of Indian Business – Kamal Nath.

CNBC-TV18’s Outstanding Business Leader of the Year – Deepak Parekh, for his achievement and contribution to not only the banking and the financial services and the housing sector but to the Indian economy.

Social Enterprise of the Year – Akshay Patra.

CNBC-TV18’s Outstanding Company of the Year – Reliance Industries, for scale, consistency and initiating new businesses with long-term growth prospects.

Lifetime Achievement Award – Keshub Mahindra, for his contribution beyond his own industry and company and his high standards of corporate governance.
