This has been a year of ‘shocks’. Anything that startles you, shocks you out of your wits, has been in the news for days at end. Is this what will make or break 2011? Things out of the ordinary, amplified, viewed through a kaleidoscope and presented perfectly gift wrapped on your table, wonders Jhinuk Sen.
The New KBC, as Sony Entertainment Television officials like to call it, had begun with a bang despite the skepticism around the show given the previous two seasons. As the show ends, the industry is divided over the latest season’s performance – while one view is that the finale episode could have rated better, the other view is that this has been one of the better seasons, where all episodes held on to the ratings till the very end, and the show allowed Sony to beat Zee on enough occasions to be at the No. 3 spot.
The television industry had an action-filled week. First, the I&B Ministry directed Colors and Imagine to change the timings of ‘Bigg Boss’ and ‘Rakhi ka Insaaf’ to a later slot. Then, Colors challenged the Ministry’s directive in court and got a stay on the order. While these developments raise quite a few questions, one cannot help but compare a similar scenario, including Star Plus’ ‘Sach ka Saamna’ last year, and wonder why the Ministry issues different directives for the so-called ‘adult’ content.
Along with shifting the telecast timings of ‘Bigg Boss’ and ‘Rakhi Ka Insaaf’ to after 11 pm, the I&B Ministry has also restrained news channels from showing clippings of these two shows between 5 am and 11 pm, terming them as ‘adult’ content. News channel editors have called it a move in the right direction and stressed that news should have some sensitivity.
Whether it was the return of the original host or Sony’s sudden turn of fate or the sheer time gap since it was last seen, ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ has emerged as the highest rated show amongst recently launched big-ticket properties with an opening TRP of 6.2 TVR. KBC allowed Sony to catapult to the number three spot without any support from movies or events.
The much anticipated reality shows war has finally begun. ‘Bigg Boss’ – Season 4 opened well for Colors and ‘KBC’, again in its fourth season on Sony, managed a good launch for the channel. As the industry waits to see what MasterChef does for Star Plus, media planners give their views on the 9.00 pm war between Bigg Boss and KBC.
