IRS 2010 Q1: Mirchi tops among Top 10 radio players, Big FM follows; listenership improves

The Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2010 Q1 data on the radio industry, released by the Media Research Users’ Council (MRUC) once again shows Radio Mirchi as the lead FM radio station across India. Following at No. 2 is Big FM which is a distant second. My FM, which is ranked ninth, has emerged as the fastest growing FM station in India.

According to IRS Q1 2010 (last one week listenership), Radio Mirchi, Big FM, Red FM and AIR FM Gold are the FM stations among the Top 10 to have witnessed any growth in listenership. On the other hand, AIR FM Rainbow, Radio City, Suryan FM, Radio Mantra and Radio One have witnessed a slight decline in listenership.

Radio Mirchi, Big FM, AIR FM Rainbow, Red FM, Radio City, Suryan FM, AIR FM Gold, Radio Mantra, My FM and Radio One comprise the Top 10 FM radio stations in the all India market. Compared to last year, in the latest round, FM stations have fared better in terms of listenership.

At No. 1, Radio Mirchi grew from 40,438,000 in IRS 2009 R2 to 41,194,000 in this round, an increase of 1.87 per cent. Big FM, the second most popular FM station, has seen a 7.56 per cent increase in listenership – from 20,380,000 in the previous round to 21,920,000 in IRS 2010 Q1.

AIR FM Rainbow has maintained its No. 3 position among the Top 10 FM stations in India. However, the FM station has seen a decline in listenership at 20,797,000 in IRS 2010 Q1, as against 21,293,000 in IRS 2009 R2, down 2.33 per cent.

Meanwhile, Red FM has see a marginal hike of 0.04 per cent in listenership – from 18,614,000 in IRS 2009 R2 to 18,621,000 in the latest round.

Radio City has a listenership of 13,916,000 in IRS 2010 Q1, as against 14,076,000 in the previous round, a decline of 1.14 per cent. Ranked sixth is Suryan FM, which too has seen a marginal decline of 0.44 per cent at 12,754,000 in this round from 12,810,000 in IRS 2009 R2.

Government-owned FM station AIR FM Gold, on the other hand, has seen 6.28 per cent increase in listenership – from 9,314,000 in IRS 2009 R2 to 9,899,000 in this round.

Ranked eighth is Radio Mantra, which has dipped marginally from 4,227,000 in IRS 2009 R2 to 4,192,000 in IRS 2010 Q1, down 0.83 per cent.

My FM has emerged as the fastest growing FM station among the Top 10 private FM stations in terms of listenership at 4,022,000 in IRS 2010 Q1, as against 3,669,000 in the previous round, an increase of 9.62 per cent.

Radio One at No 10 has declined from 3,683,000 in IRS 2009 R2 to 3,679,000 in the latest round, down 0.11 per cent.
