Pepsi tries to add fizz to depleting top brass

Pepsi is reconstituting its top order after a spate of exits during the last few weeks. Ever since Lloyd Mathias, Pepsico's executive vice president, left last month, there have been a spate of resignations within the company across all levels.

The recent high profile exits include those of Subroto Chattopadhyay, executive director and the head of non-carb business, and Anup Tawakly, the financial controller. While Chattopadhyay has been replaced by Geetu Verma who was senior marketing manager, North Europe Business Unit of Frito-Lay, Praveen Someshwar, head of Western operations is being brought in to fill up the vacancy created by Tawakly's exit. On the other hand, Pratik Pota, vice president, Airtel, is being brought in to replace Mathias.

This is not all. Pepsi is also busy filling vacancies left by others who have quit during the last one month. These include, VP, Anand Sahay and Amitabh Bose and Kiran Balram, both GMs. Earlier, Pepsi had lost another GM, Sanyukta Adige. Besides, there have been quite a few people leaving at the manager level also during the last few weeks, a company source told ET. “The legal team has seen some attrition too,” they said.

Such exits are common in the soft drink industry in the second half of the year, says Pavan Bhatia, Pepsi's Human Resources head. “People start looking for more lucrative options during the lean season and after having pocketed the bonus,” he said and added that at 10%, employee turnover at Pepsi is still the lowest.

While exits pose a challenge, Pepsi has also seen some routine internal movements. Sudhanshu Goyala who spearheaded Pepsi's research in India and the quality head, VSS Chowdhry have been moved to Frito Lay Thailand to be based in Bangkok. Rajan Bhalla, head of customer marketing, is replacing Goyala as the consumer insights director and the erstwhile project director, Anil Sondhi has replaced Chowdhry as quality director.

Last year, as a part of organisational restructuring the company had created a 10-member executive committee and a new position of executive director (market operations). Tanmay Vats, the former franchise director was elevated as executive director (market operations).
