Tarun Tejpal charged with rape by Goa Police

Tarun Tejpal has been charged with the rape of a woman colleague by Goa Police. The Tehelka founder has been chargesheeted for all offences that he was booked for, including rape, under the new Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013, in a 2,700-page chargesheet filed by the Goa Police on February 17, 2014.

The chargesheet is divided into 12 volumes and it has over 400 pages on the CCTV footage obtained from the premises of the hotel where the victim was allegedly assaulted.

The victim’s statement and Tejpal’s apology letter to her have been admitted as primary evidence in the chargesheet, along with the emails between the victim and the Tehelka management.

As is known, Tejpal has been accused of raping the woman colleague in a lift at a Goa hotel during Tehelka’s ThinkFest event in November 2013. The woman has since quit the organisation.

Tejpal was arrested on November 30, 2013 by the Goa Police after a local court rejected his anticipatory bail plea. Meanwhile, Tejpal has been denying the charges. Following the charges and amid intense media scrutiny, Tejpal had recused himself from active duties as Tehelka Chief for a period of six months.
