MIB appoints Veena Jain as Doordarshan DG; move undermines Prasar Bharati's autonomy?

In a recent development Ministry of Information and Broadcasting appoints Veena Jain as Director General for Doordarshan and OSD New Media Wing and Social Media cell. In an announcement release MIB said, “She will report to ministry for all the purposes.”

The appointment of Veena Jain as DG created a spark in media as it was done without the knowledge of Prasar Bharti Chief Jawhar Sircar and A Surya Prakash, suggested media reports.

Sircar spoke to exchange4media and said that he was not marked in the copy of the order about the appointment of Veena Jain. He said, "Let us first wait until the facts are clear. Not jump to the conclusions."

Doordarshan and AIR are under the purview of Prasar Bharti and the employees are supposed to report to the Public Broadcaster, not directly to the Ministry.

But this appointment by MIB has raised a question whether government is trying to control the public broadcaster. When contacted, Bimal Julka, Secretary, MIB denied commenting on this matter.
