Budding journalist with grown-up ideas – Nitin Pandey

As I sit down to put down my thoughts on this last day of 2009, I am recalling the time when I was in my 7th standard back in 1998, when I used to boast to my friends that I would become a celebrity by 2010 and all of them would be queuing up to take my autograph! Well, we have just stepped into 2010, and my celebrity status is nowhere in sight, but I have definitely found the path that can help me fulfil my dreams.

For me job is like ‘Shaadi Ka Laddu’ (I know it is a strange comparison); and like ‘shaadi’ is mandatory in Indian tradition, so is getting a job, and hence I too had to taste this ‘laddu’ (the ‘job wala laddu’ and not the ‘shaadi wala laddu’). exchange4media has given me the platform to fulfil my professional dreams and I started my journey here in September 2009 after completing my diploma in journalism.

I got my first assignment after 25 days, where I had to interview a British guy. I managed to do it perfectly and it certainly gave my confidence a boost. I have been asked to cover the media (Print and Broadcast) beat, which is me area of interest. Later on, I started working on feature stories, and it was really fun to chase people for comments, though sometimes exasperating too. Though they kept me waiting for their replies, most of the time I knew what they would say.

There have been times when I committed blunders in some reports, but they have been good learning experiences and have helped me grow in this profession.

In the last three months, I have done some stories that not only concerned the Indian media industry, but also the international media fraternity. I also got the opportunity to travel outside the city to cover a few events. These events had been a learning experience for me, where I got to meet lots of people and learn so much from them.

All in all, 2009 has been a great year for me, except for one thing – my work schedule has led to me getting spectacles!

Here’s hoping that 2010 will bring lots of good news for India and for the media fraternity, and exchange4media specifically. I also hope that I will be breaking more important news in the year ahead, I also want to report on every important development in my beat.
