Star India bags BCCI media rights for Rs 6138 cr

Star India has won the auction for BCCI media rights for international and domestic cricket from 2018-2023.
Sony, Star and Reliance were named eligible parties for bidding for all the three packages. The e-auction started 2pm on 3 April. The bidding had started at Rs 4,176 crore on day 1. The second day of the e-auction of media rights i.e on 4 April, for India's bilateral series at home saw the bidding rates go beyond the Rs 6,000 crore mark.

This is the first time that the BCCI conducted an e-auction for the rights, as opposed to its conventional closed bid auction model. The tender for bidding was floated by BCCI in February. According to media reports, all companies in the fray were assessed by BCCI’s legal team.

The rights were sold in three categories-- the Global TV Rights plus Rest of World (ROW) Digital Rights package, ii) Indian sub-continent Digital Rights package and iii) Global Consolidated Rights package.

According to media reports, the base price for the digital rights per match was pegged at INR 8 crore per match for the first year and at INR 7 crore per match for the next four years. For the television rights, the base price for the first year was INR 35 crore per match and INR 33 crore per match for the next four years.

The Indian team is expected to play 22 Tests, 42 ODIs and 38 Twenty20 Internationals at home in the next five-year cycle.
