Star India agrees to share IPL matches with Prasar Bharati on 50-50 revenue share

It is a treat for cricket fans now that Doordarshan viewers can also enjoy the Indian Premier League 2018 (IPL) matches, starting from 7 April. Star India has agreed to share some of the matches with Prasar Bharati on a one hour deferred live basis.

“To bring Vivo IPL 2018 to a wider audience Star TV has agreed to share with Prasar Bharati, select matches on a one hour deferred live basis with 50-50 revenue sharing,” tweeted Prasar Bharati on 5 April.

In a conference at BCCI office, Uday Shankar, Chairman And CEO - Star India & President - 21st Century Fox, Asia said, “ In the past also we have voluntarily shared some entertainment shows, like Satyamev Jayate with the public broadcaster. We were always open to that, but there can be no live share. We told them that we can share highlights of some matches and some select matches for the viewers who don’t subscribe to Pay TV, just to give them exposure to IPL. It is good for IPL that new a audience will sample it. We will give them one match every Sunday, but it is not the case that the feed is being shared, that happens only when BCCI matches take place under the mandatory share act, where live stream is shared simultaneously. This is more in the nature of providing sampling opportunities to those who do not have access to pay TV.”

Star India bagged the IPL 2018 rights in September last year for Rs 16,347.5 crores. The matches will start from 7th April and this is the first time IPL will be telecast on Doordarshan Networks.
