Raj Nayak to Colors; Aidem clients not worried

Raj Nayak’s decision to accept Viacom18’s offer to be Colors’ CEO came as a surprise to many. After all, Nayak has been wearing the entrepreneurial hat for many years now and more recently through his venture Aidem Media. At the same time, Colors has been the talking point of the Hindi general entertainment sector given the intense success the channel has seen in the last three years.

What does Nayak’s move to Colors mean for the channel? Industry circuits were busy discussing this in detail on April 18, 2011, when the announcement was made. For many, the consensus was ‘good for Colors’. Given Nayak’s experience in the broadcasting space, some even toyed with the thought of what this means for Colors’ advertising revenues, which are said to be in the vicinity of Rs 750 crore net in the last year.

The channel or Nayak are however not speaking on this, just yet. The other set of conversations is what happens to Aidem Media now.

In the last year, Aidem Media has been busy between hiring key senior people such as Kaushal Dalal and M Suku and embarking on new initiatives such as the JV with e-Bus Media Networks for India and Middle-East.

The company was in news last week for the exit of NDTV news channels from Aidem Media. But even as recent as last week, Nayak’s team has been busy identifying alliances with various people and companies.

Now with Nayak headed to Colors, what happens to Aidem. There is yet no clarity on the precise road ahead for Aidem and Nayak was not available for comments on the subject. However, Aidem clients don’t seem too worried yet.

In a conversation with exchange4media, Markand Adhikari, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, SAB Group said, “We are not worried with this development and there are two parts to this. First, we have confidence in our product and we know it will find its traction in the marketplace. Second, we have a long and excellent relation with Raj Nayak. I have the highest regards for him and I know he would find a professional solution to this.”

As is known, Aidem Media sells SAB Group channels. Another key client of the company is News24 and Radio Dhamaal. Anuradha Prasad, Managing Director, BAG Films and Media that owns channels such as News24 and Radio Dhamaal, added here, “We are happy for Raj, as he heads to Colors as CEO. He had discussed this with us, so we have been in the know. Over the next couple of weeks, the team from Aidem and our teams are tabling discussions on what our sales strategies ahead should be. In any case, it was not Raj who was on-field but his team.”
