Bloomberg UTV, CNBC-TV18 gear up for Budget day

With the Budget session of Parliament commencing from February 21, 2011, news channels, especially business news channels, have their hands full over the next few weeks. Statistics show that convalescence period of the Indian economy, post the global recession, is over. The Sensex is hovering around the 20,000-mark, while Planning Commission has projected a GDP growth of over 8.5 per cent this fiscal. But what the ‘aam aadmi’ is more interested in is what the Finance Minister has in store for them in his Budget presentation on February 28.

exchange4media takes a look at how a couple of business news channels are planning to dress up their content line-up around the Union Budget 2011.

Bloomberg UTV
Bloomberg UTV has divided its Budget coverage plan broadly into two parts – Corporate Programming and Consumer Programming.

To gauge how corporate chieftains are scripting a big leap forward for their cities, the channel has introduced a show called ‘From The Metros’ (aired on Saturday at 4 pm and Sunday at 7:30 pm). A report card and critical look at India’s place among the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) nations will be featured in ‘How India Stacks Up’ on February 23 at 6:30 pm. In the programme titled ‘On The World in India’, top FIIs will share their views on the Indian capital markets and the economy. The programme will be aired on Monday and Tuesday at 8:30 pm and 11 pm.

Apart from these, the channel has planned several special programmes such as ‘Budget 2011 Worldview’ on February 28 at 4.30 pm, ‘Budget 2011 World Street’ on February 28 at 10.00 pm and ‘Budget Poll’, where senior management from leading corporate houses across major metros are engaged in a survey to determine their expectations from the Budget. The study is powered by research agency Penn, Schoen, Berland. Research findings will be used across all programming.

On the consumer programming side, specifically rural Indian market, Bloomberg UTV will air ‘Connecting Bharat’ on Thursday at 7 pm and Sunday at 1 pm. This apart, ‘The Young Mandate’ will be aired on February 26 at 1:30 pm and the following day at 7 pm. In this mandate, students of leading business schools across the country will comment on their expectations from the Budget and share their striking ideas on how things should be done. ‘A Leap of Luxury’, which will be telecast on February 26 at 10 am and on February 27 at 8:30 pm, will decode the DNA of the luxury market.

CNBC-TV18
Another business news channel, CNBC-TV18, has planned its Budget coverage in two phases – Pre- and Post-Budget day coverage. The pre-Budget coverage will focus on key aspects of the Government’s fiscal policy. The programmes in this phase include ‘What The World Wants’; ‘India Tonight Budget Specials’ (Monday-Thursday at 10:30 pm) – Karan Thapar will engage with India’s top policy minds; ‘Budget Report Card’ (Saturday at 9 am and 9:30 pm, Sunday at 9 pm); ‘Taxing Times’ (Saturday at 10 am, Sunday at 10 am and 8 pm); ‘Priceline’ (Saturday at 11:30 am and 10:30 pm, Sunday at 8:30 am); and ‘The Development Agenda’ (Saturday at 12 noon, and Sunday at 9 am and 6:30 pm).

Leading up to the Budget day, CNBC-TV18 will present the ‘Economic Survey Special’, a show on the annual Economic Survey released by the Government, which is a comprehensive overview of the Indian economy. Following that, the channel will present Railway Budget specials to analyse its impact with regards to tariffs, freight policy, cross-subsidisation and new route announcements.

On Budget day, CNBC-TV18 will present exclusive and comprehensive live Budget coverage throughout the day and from multiple locations, showcasing reactions from the leading names in India Inc and policy making, the nation’s biggest market experts and fund managers, tax specialists and views of India’s flagship industry bodies such as the CII, FICCI and ASSOCHAM. With an in-house panel of experts, CNBC-TV18 will present incisive, immediate analysis and impact of budgetary announcements as the Finance Minister’s Budget speech is delivered, through power-packed interviews and graphics.

This will be followed by an exclusive interview with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and a line-up of special Budget bulletins throughout the day. The channel will also present a Budget special of its award winning primetime show, ‘India Business Hour – Budget Special’, which will round up the day’s coverage and provide a comprehensive review of the national reaction to Union Budget 2011.
