BARC data tamper case: Police looking for more leads

Police continue their investigation into the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India data tamper case. The investigation officer revealed that the accused fixed TRP meters at selected houses and forced them to watch a particular serial.

“Barometers is a confidential device placed in houses. There are chances that it might be rigged. Raju and his team bribed house owners and forced them into watching serials of his preference”, the officer told to a leading news channel.

On 23 January, the first arrest was made after a complaint filed by BARC, subsequently, five more people were arrested by the Bengaluru Cyber Crime Police for trying to tamper with the television viewership data generated by the rating body.

Those arrested include TV producer Raju who produced Kannada serial Kaveri on Udaya TV, Amma Ninnegage for ETV Kannada (Colors Kannada now) and four other accused, Suresh, Jemsy, Subhash and Madhu.

The Benguluru police revealed to a leading daily that the main accused Raju told the occupants of the home that the rigged device was a booster box supporting their set-up boxes. Raju also paid the electricity bills of the houses and exempted them from paying their monthly cable fees.

According to the Deccan Herald, police found that Raju had properties worth around Rs 90 crore after authorities raided his house. The police is yet to gather additional details regarding the money that the producer took from other TV producers whose shows’ ratings were boosted by manipulation.
