Ambika Soni urges media to abide by NBA’s guidelines on Telangana report

With the Srikrishna Committee’s report on demand for a separate state of Telangana due to be tabled on December 31, 2010, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni has urged the media to exercise restraint in the coverage and not to speculate anything given the sensitive nature of the issue.

After a meeting with Home Minister P Chidambaram, Soni suggested that a nodal spokesperson be appointed to make announcements about the contents of the report, which is to be submitted to the Central Government December 31, 2010. “There will be a nodal spokesperson so that all channels get official information on the whole thing,” she said at a press conference.

Soni appealed to the media to abide by the guidelines of the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) and not telecast speculative stories, which might lead to untoward incidents. The NBA has already issued a list of do’s and don’ts for all 48 television channels and 4,800 cable operators in Andhra Pradesh. The Central Government has also asked the State Government to make use of the Cable Operators Act of 1995 to cancel licenses of the operators who violated the guidelines.

The meeting, attended by the Cabinet Secretary, Information and Broadcasting Secretary, and Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh, discussed the various issues related to the coverage of the Panel’s report.

The Srikrishna Committee was appointed by the Government of India on February 3 this year to report on the demand for a separate state of Telangana.
