At the 10th edition of ENBA, senior politician and Chairman of Indian Premier League (IPL), Rajeev Shukla spoke about the future of TV news and how the contemporary news media scenario desperately needed a makeover.

“Journalism has become all about having proximity with important people. Earlier politicians were running after journalists for coverage and now it has become the other way round. Earlier we were in demand, now they are in demand. Now is the time to introspect about getting the glory back which journalism was known for. There are many other aberrations of media that we need to look at and fix in today’s media”, said Shukla.
Shukla also underlined the need for independent journalism and agreed that there were media houses that were reporting balanced news and some that projected a biased narrative of facts. “I think news channels should stay away from political influence. If I can give an example of News 24, no political party has ever complained against it for reporting bias. I think it is important for the media to be independent and report facts even if they are associated with politicians in some way or the other.”

Shukla also had a word of advice for the current government. He said that the current leadership does not interact with media like UPA regime did. “I would say the Prime Minister should regularly interact with the media in the same way in which Atal Bihari Vajpayee did. Escaping media queries is not the way, engaging with them is the right approach”, said Shukla.
