Union Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the 'Regional News Editors' Conference in Chennai today.

Organised by the Press Information Bureau, the two-day conference will be addressed by union ministers, including Ravi Shankar Prasad, Nirmala Sitaraman and higher officials of Shipping and Highways Department.

Underlining the critical role of the media, Naidu urged that the media should not mix news and views and “needs to practice self regulation for the sake of national interest."

"The challenge before the media is to ensure quality, credibility and responsibility," Naidu said, adding that “social media defies traditional modes of regulation and censorship."

"The Regional Editors Conference is an attempt to take the government's development programmes to the last mile. The media is a partner in the progress of the country, and has to play a crucial role in inclusive development," Naidu further added.
