Rural data impact on BARC Ratings: FTA channels, DD Channels among top 10

BARC India on Friday released the first set of ratings including rural data. There were some big changes seen in the ratings as well as the rankings of the channels. Some of these were expected while some were not. For instance, it was known that FTA (free-to-air) channels would do well with rural data, however, it was not know that Zee Anmol would climb up to No.3 spot among Hindi GECs from the bottom of the ratings table. Similarly, there were many other changes that were new to the ratings table. The reach of BARC has now been expanded to the reach of 153.5 million TV households representing all India. Exchange4media takes a look at some of these changes that occurred with the arrival of rural data.
While Star Plus stayed on the top spot with 804 million and Colors next with 708 million, the No.3 spot was a surprise. Zee Anmol, the FTA channel, rose to No.3 spot with 609 million. It even to came ahead of Zee TV which had 588 million. Star Utsav rose to No.5 spot with 500 million. One of the biggest change included DD National among the top 10 list with ratings of 381 million. It registered the highest average time spent (ATS) was the highest among Hindi GECs with 53 minutes 39 seconds. Rishtey, also an FTA channel, was in the top 10 list with ratings of 270 million.
Sun TV not only took the No.1 spot among the Tamil genre, but also was the most watched channel across all the genres. With rural data coming in, the ratings of the channel rose to 1092 million. The Telugu market saw a lot of changes as ETV Telugu took to No.1 spot from No.3 last week with 424 million. Zee Telugu on the other hand slipped to No.3 from No.1 with ratings 316 million. In the Kannada market Udaya TV rose to No.2 spot with 154 million while Zee Kannada slipped down to No.5. Dangal TV took No.1 spot in the Bhojpuri market leaving Big Ganga at No.2 spot. Dangal TV was at No.1 with ratings rising to 12 million from 1.5 million last week. Big Ganga slipped to No.2 with its ratings declining to 8.1 million in week 41 from 3.8 last week.
In the English Business News genre ET Now rose to take up No.1 spot yet again. Its ratings rose to 484 million. CNBC TV18 came in second with ratings of 368 million. In the English GEC genre though Zee Café remained on top, the other top five included a surprising Comedy Central at No.3 spot after AXN. Colors Infinity did well today Colors Infinity SD and HD feed being in good ratings of 88 (‘000s) and 58 (‘000s).
In the Hindi movies Star Gold was at the top with ratings of 486 million with the premiere of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’.
On the sports front Star Sports 1 and Star Sports 3 came in at No.1 and No.2 spot, respectively. This was due to the Paytm ODI Trophy between India and South Africa.
Discovery Channel extended its lead over its competition scoring of 6.4 million. Times Now too extended its lead over its competition to rise to 560 (‘000s). The kids genre too saw a large spike in ratings with Nick at 97 million.
