Private FM players can broadcast AIR news in same format: Govt

Speaking during Question Hour in the Lok Sabha today, July 16, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar said that private FM radio players will be given permission to broadcast news only from bulletins of All India Radio. He also added that the FM radio policy can be relaxed in future.

So far, FM players do not have permission to broadcast news under the existing guidelines. Javadekar said that under the guidelines approved for FM Phase III, private FM radio players will be allowed to carry AIR news bulletins in exactly the same format and presenters will be allowed to read AIR news.

He further said that once news broadcast is allowed, the Government could consider giving further “relaxation” based on the experience. Meanwhile, sporting events, excluding live coverage, live commentaries of sporting events of local nature, information on traffic, weather, announcement on civic amenities, and natural calamities are treated as non-news categories and will be allowed on private FM.
