Ravish Kumar, Shashi Tharoor and 25 others win Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award

Ravish Kumar of NDTV India, won the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award in Hindi broadcast category and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor won the award for his book 'An Era of Darkness: The Age of British Empire in India.'

While Rahul Kotiyal of Satyagrah.scroll.in, received the award in the Hindi print category, Reshma Sanjeev Shivadekar of Loksatta, won the award in the Regional Language category.

Vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu, who was the chief guest at the function, handed over the awards to 27 winners – in 25 categories, including print and broadcast – for outstanding work done in 2016 during the 12th edition of the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards held, Wednesday, in Delhi.

“Journalism is all about the conversation of the people and for the people. There should be some amount of regulation but regulation should not become strangulation," he said. Speaking about the awards he said,"Ramnath Goenka embodied the finest qualities of journalism of courage and commitment: fierce independence, relentless pursuit of facts, robust determination to withstand pressures, to constantly ask questions and to uphold the principles of freedom of expression in the face of every challenge. These attributes also constitute the highest principles of citizenship and are necessary for strengthening our democracy."

Reflecting on the responsibility of the media, Naidu further said, “In my view, the media's role should be the empowerment of people through information, social mobilisation, building partnerships, catalysing individual and collective actions for the betterment of lives and promoting peace and harmony, and supporting national reconstruction. Every news report should result in an enhanced level of understanding and inspire action.”

Recipient of the prestigious award, NDTV news anchor Ravish Kumar spoke to exchange4media about his win and the future of television journalism. He said that the television industry is grappling with many issues and that the situation very critical. “Media functions on the trust of the viewers and readers,” he said.

“If you start debating on Rahul Gandhi watching a film then it means that some television channels have decided that they will destroy the society. Like they have destroyed themselves, they will also destroy the society,” he further said.

In his speech at the event Raj Kamal Jha, Chief Editor, The Indian Express, congratulated the winners and said, “If you had not told these stories they would never have been told...Good journalism is without favour and without fear.”

While speaking about the fear that journalists in India live in these days, he also remembered Gauri Lankesh, Sudip Bhowmick and Shantanu Bhowmik, journalists who were killed this year.

“There has been a lot of talk this year in media about fear, fear of being bullied, fear of being intimidated. In some cases fear for your life,” he shared.

The winners were chosen by an eminent jury who scrutinised over 800 entries. The jury members included former Supreme Court judge B N Srikrishna, HDFC Ltd chairman Deepak Parekh, former chief election commissioner S Y Quraishi and senior journalist Pamela Philipose.

The Express Group instituted the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards in 2006 as part of the centenary year celebrations of its founder, Ramnath Goenka. Over the years, the awards have become the gold standard of journalism honours in India, the ultimate recognition that every outstanding journalist working in the country searches for today. The awards, which come with a trophy and a reward of Rs 1 lakh to each of the winners, aim to celebrate excellence in journalism, recognise courage and commitment and showcase the outstanding contributions of journalists from across the country.
