“Unauthorised persons and reporters” won’t be allowed into Uttarakhand government offices to keep “confidential information” from getting leaked, as per an order by the state government.

According to a report in The Indian Express, the Uttarakhand government in a three-page order dated December 27 said agendas of Cabinet meetings were leaked to the media in the past, and publishing these issues before the meeting was “absolutely unfortunate and objectionable”.

Other then prohibiting the entry of unauthorised persons and reporters to government offices, the order also stated that officials will their personal visitors “at the office reception”.

However, after the state media interpreted the order as Trivendra Singh Rawat-led government’s move to reduce transparency, the Chief Secretary Utpal Kumar Singh clarified in a press conference that the order was not an attempt to withhold information from the media or to reduce systemic transparency instead it was to ensure that only authentic information based on facts reached the media.

“Our effort is to give you authentic information based on facts. That is why we are putting in place a system where only verified information is shared with you by officials authorised for the purpose on a regular basis,” he said.
