IRS Q3 2010: 5 out of top 13 dailies see de-growth in Kolkata; Ananda Bazar Patrika maintains lead

The newspaper market in Kolkata held little surprise in the third quarter results of the Indian Readership Survey. Ananda Bazar Patrika leads the list, followed by Bartaman, The Telegraph and The Times of India. Meanwhile, five out of the top 13 dailies have seen negative growth in this quarter.

Ananda Bazar Patrika has seen a marginal increase in its Average Issue Readership (AIR) of 0.83 per cent in Q3 at 2,807,000. Bartaman follows at No. 2 with an AIR of 1,002,000 in Q3, a 10.54 per cent decline as compared to the Q2 figures of 1,120,000.

English dailies The Telegraph and The Times of India are at No.3 and No. 4, respectively. The Telegraph has seen a marginal growth of 0.11 per cent in its AIR at 883,000, while The Times of India has seen a slight dip of 0.18 per cent and its AIR in Q3 stands at 559,000.

Bengali dailies Aajkaal, Ganashakti and Sangbad Pratidin follow at No. 5, No. 6 and No. 7, respectively. While both Aajkaal and Sangbad Pratidin have seen decline in AIR, Ganashakti has seen positive growth.

Among English dailies in Kolkata, The Telegraph is the most read, followed by The Times of India, The Statesman, The Economic Times and Hindustan Times. The Statesman has seen a 3.01 per cent fall in its AIR at 129,000. The Economic Times has recorded an AIR of 95,000, up 1.06 per cent, while Hindustan Times has seen a 7.89 per cent rise in its AIR at 41,000.

Overall, the market has seen a decent growth with a mix of red (decline in AIR) and black (increase in AIR) in the chart.

Interestingly, Anand Bazar Patrika’s AIR is greater than the sum of the AIRs of Bartaman, The Telegraph and The Times of India put together.

[The mentioned readership figures are Average Issue Readership (AIR) figures, Total Readership (TR) may vary. After various discussions with advertisers and media buyers, as a policy exchange4media uses only AIR numbers.]
