Hindustan hits newsstand today in a ‘progressive’ avatar

Hindi daily Hindustan is hitting the newsstands countrywide in new avatar on April 12, 2011. The newspaper has been designed by Mario Garcia, an eminent media designer who had also designed business newspaper Mint from the HT stable. Apart from changes in design, format and colour pattern, readers will also see some prominent editorial changes in the newspaper. However, these developments will not have any impact on the cover price of the daily.

Meanwhile, Hindustan has also come up with new tagline – ‘Tarakki Ko Chahiye Naya Nazaria’ (Progress needs a new viewpoint). Speaking on the thought process behind the tagline, Shashi Shekhar, Editor-in-Chief, Hindustan, stated, “We have done massive research before launching the newspaper in a new avatar. We went to small towns and metros to know what our readers want from us. We found that people want to see progress in their lives. And if they progress, the country will progress too. Hence, our tagline also reflects the same.”

On the process of the re-launch of the newspaper, Shekhar noted, “I myself sat with Mario, our designer, and suggested that he should not to impose American designs on us, rather see what Indian readers want. They want clutter free newspaper full of colours. The newspaper we have come out with is the need of today’s readers. And we have kept all their needs in mind before coming out in the market with the new-look newspaper.”

Sources close to the development informed that Hindustan would come up with two new special magazine supplements as well from this week onwards. The first, named ‘Anokhi’, is focused on women, while the other supplement will focus on glamour and movies and will be published every Sunday.

As for the editorial changes, from April 12 onwards, the newspaper will carry links in the front page for the inside pages’ stories, indicating ‘Must Read’ and ‘Must Know’ sections. The newspaper will also dedicate a page, five days a week, themed as Tarakki (progress) to stories on Science and Technology, Career, Health and Current Affairs. Besides this, on the same page, readers will also get to know about the various new websites and their uses.

As per the details available on the April 11, 2011 edition of Hindustan, to make the reading experience better, the newspaper has been customised in a way that readers can read more news in less time. The language of the newspaper has been kept ‘Bolchal ki Bhasha’ (daily conversational language).
