The Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP), the nodal agency for all Union government advertisements, had in September suspended the empanelment of 51 newspapers for two months, Minister of State (Ministry of Information and Broadcasting) Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore has informed the Lok Sabha.
The decision was taken on September 13.
The action came after the Press Council of India (PCI) censured these dailies for breach of journalism norms. Of the 51 newspapers in the list, 37 were involved in paid news, according to the PCI.
Irresponsible and mala fide reporting, inaccurate and disrespectful news reports, breach of journalistic ethics by publication of obscene photographs or false news and intend to blackmail were some of the many reasons specified by the Press Council of India for censuring the newspapers.
