Flashed yesterday: Dainik Jagran most read newspaper in India, ToI top English newspaper: IRS 2017

Dainik Jagran is the top read publication in India with total readership (last 1 month read) of over 7 crore, according to the Indian Readership Survey 2017 released on January 18, 2017 after a gap of four years. The second and third most read publications in all languages are Hindustan and Amar Ujala with over 5.2 crore and 4.6 crore respectively.


In English language publications, The Times of India is the top ranking publication in readership with over 1.3 crore readership, according to IRS 2017, while Hindustan Times with over 68 lakhs readership is the second most read English newspaper with The Hindu English securing third position with a readership of over 53 lakhs.

Interestingly, The Economic Times despite being  a business newspaper came up with a readership of a little over 31 lakhs leaving behind other big publications such as The Indian Express with 15 lakhs and Mumbai Mirror with over 18 lakhs.


In regional language category, Daily Thanthi is the most read publication with over 2.3 crore readership and Lokmat and Malayala Manorama (D) are the second and third most read publications with 1.8 crore and 1.5 crore readership respectively.

India Today (English) and India Today (Hindi) emerged as the most read magazines, as per the IRS 2017 data, with a total readership of over 79 lakhs and 71 lakhs respectively. Samanya Gyan Darpan (Hindi) holds the third position with a readership of over 68 lakhs. 

“If there is one report for which the entire industry came together it is IRS 2017,” said Ashish Bhasin, chairman, MRUC and chairman and CEO - South Asia, Dentsu Aegis Network.
“I think overall it seems to be a good IRS result for the industry per se, individually once we get into the depth of the market it will be a great learning for all of us. Good quality, credible and authentic work done. Once you go deeper, you understand if there are any challenges but on the face of it the industry looks pretty happy,” said NP Sathyamurthy of MRUC. 

“The IRS Techcom, RSCI, MRUC along with the Nielsen team have left no stone unturned in their endeavour to provide the industry with a reliable and robust study,” the MRUC statement read.

Around 3, 30,000 households (urban 2.14 lakh and rural 1.16 lakh) have been included as compared to 2,35000 sample size in IRS 2013.

IRS 2017 has covered over 600 publications, 71 product categories (at penetration and brand level), covering 28 states and 4 union territories, 95 cities with 5 Lakh+ population, 91 districts and 101 district clusters.
