City Plus scores a 6 in Bangalore; eyes regional field

City Plus, the community newspaper from Jagran Group, has launched its sixth edition in Bangalore on February 24, 2011. With this launch, City Plus now has a total of 25 editions, while Jagran has achieved the mark of 80 editions across the country. The weekly newspaper, which is available for free, will target 45,000 residents and commercial establishments in the Malleshwaram area of Bangalore.

Meanwhile, the paper, which is currently available in five cities – Delhi and NCR, Bangalore, Pune, Mumbai and Hyderabad – is mulling its entry in Gujarat and cities of South India. Speaking to exchange4media on the launch, Salil Tandon, CEO, City Plus, informed, “We want to spread our network all over the city. In due time, this can lead us to launch more editions for the city of Bangalore.”

Regarding fixing a cover price for the newspaper, Tandon maintained that there would be no change in their strategy of distributing the newspaper free of cost. “We conduct survey in the area before the launch and select niche upper class category for distribution of the newspaper. It also helps advertisers to reach out to the target group. Being free also allows us to decide which group of readers we want to focus on,” added Tandon.

It may be noted that at present, City Plus is available in English language only. Tandon, however, did not rule out the option of getting into the regional language domain as well.

City Plus targets local advertisers – from small shops, retailers, and professionals to big retail stores. The newspaper recently relaunched its website and marked a robust presence in the digital domain. Tandon commented, “We have not spent much on the digital domain yet. This year, we can spend 30 per cent of our marketing budget on the digital domain. We plan engage readers through social networking websites too.”

City Plus is positioned editorially as a paper that focuses on life and lifestyle on a more local and sub-local level. The newspaper carries localised community news, events and happenings, while the features focus on lifestyle, accompanied with customised information, inputs on a more local level for value-addition to the story, more relevant to the individual readers.

The first edition of the newspaper was launched in Bangalore from Indira Nagar on September 27, 2007. As of now City Plus has its presence in cities including Delhi and NCR, Bangalore, Pune, Mumbai and Hyderabad.
