IRS 2012 Q2: TOI, HT lose readers this quarter
Six of the top 10 English dailies have seen decline as per IRS 2012 Q2 data. DNA, Mumbai Mirror, Deccan Chronicle & The Tribune see growth
Six of the top 10 English dailies have seen decline as per the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2012 Q2 data released by the Media Research Users Council (MRUC) on October 1, 2012.
The Times of India continues to lead the list, but has seen decline in readership in this quarter. The paper has lost a nominal 9,000 readers, with its Q2 average issue readership (AIR) at 7,643,000, as against 7,652,000 in the previous quarter.
Close competitor Hindustan Time has also seen decline in readership. The paper has registered an AIR of 3,767,000 in Q2, losing 38,000 readers from its Q1 figure of 3,805,000.
The Hindu, which is placed third, has also lost 25,000 readers during the quarter. The paper has garnered an AIR of 2,208,000 in Q2, as against 2,233,000 in the previous quarter. The Telegraph, too, has seen marginal decline in readership – from 1,292,000 in Q1 to 1,275,000 in this quarter.
On the other hand, Deccan Chronicle, which has been in the news for its financial woes, has seen a slight growth in its readership this quarter. The paper has registered an AIR of 1,038,000 in Q2, as compared to 1,027,000 in Q1.
DNA has added the most number of readers during the quarter at 21,000. The daily’s Q2 AIR is up at 930,000 from 909,000 in the previous quarter. Mumbai Mirror’s readership is also up at 795,000 in this quarter, as against 777,000 in Q1.
The Economic Times, the only business daily in the list, has lost a nominal 3,000 readers during the quarter, taking its AIR from 792,000 in Q1 to 789,000 in this quarter. It is degrowth for The New Indian Express as well as the paper registered an AIR of 667,000 in this quarter, down from 678,000 in Q1.
Placed at the tenth spot, The Tribune has added 16,000 readers during the quarter, taking its AIR from 624,000 in Q1 to 640,000 in Q2.
