IRS 2012 Q2: 6 of top 10 language papers see degrowth

Malayala Manorama sees the steepest fall among top 10 language dailies as per IRS 2012 Q2 data. Sakshi adds the most readers during the quarter

IRS 2012 Q2: 6 of top 10 language papers see degrowth

Six of the top 10 language have seen decline in readership as per the Indian Readership (IRS) data released by the Media Research Users Council (MRUC) on October 1, 2012.

Malayala Manorama leads among language dailies, but the paper has lost 165,000 readers during the quarter, with its average issue readership at 9,710,000 in IRS 2012 Q2, as against 9,875,000 in Q1.

Lokmat follows with an AIR of 7,507,000 in Q2, up from 7,485,000 in the previous quarter. The Marathi daily has added 22,000 readers during the quarter.

Both Daily Thanthi and Mathrubhumi have seen decline in readership. While Daily Thanthi has an AIR of 7,431,000 in Q2, as compared to an AIR of 7,477,000 in Q1, Mathrubhumi’s readership has gone down from 6,600,000 in Q1 to 6,493,000 in this quarter.

Telugu daily Eenadu, on the other hand, as seen marginal growth in its readership – from 5,906,000 in Q1 to 5,925,000 in Q2, adding 19,000 readers. Sakshi is another Telugu daily that has seen growth. The paper has grown the fastest during the quarter, adding 62,000 readers. Sakshi, which is placed seventh, has registered an AIR of 5,306,000 in Q2, as compared to 5,244,000 in the previous quarter.

Ananda Bazar Patrika, Gujarat Samachar and Dinakaran have seen degrowth in this quarter. Ananda Bazar Patrika has garnered an AIR of 5,859,000 in Q2 as against 5,970,000 in Q1, losing 111,000 readers. Gujarat Samachar has lost 19,000 readers, with its Q2 AIR at 5,205,000, while Dinakaran has lost 109,000 readers, with its Q2 AIR at 4,999,000.

Placed in tenth position, Marathi newspaper Daily Sakal has added 41,000 readers during the quarter, its Q2 AIR going up to 4,437,000 in Q2.
