Reporter’s Diary: ... but how to do it!!

Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the US, had once said, “Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell ’em, ‘Certainly, I can!’ Then get busy and find out how to do it,” – following the same principle, as most journalists do, I have also completed my one-year journey as a reporter and lost the advantage of being a cub reporter.

Most of the time, my morning starts with bewildering thoughts. There is a school playground that I see everyday from the balcony of my flat. Every day when I get up and see the kids energetically playing games, it distracts me from going to office. But, I somehow manage to snap out of that feeling of world-weariness that grown-ups feel, and I am suddenly faced with reality – what is my story for today… is there anything in my story bank… not even a single story lead. And then, my mood depends on the answers.

Fortunately, there was no dearth of media stories in the year 2010. However, on the personal front, the year has been a rollercoaster ride for me. There was a time when I had to stay away from office for nearly two months due to some unavoidable circumstances. But on a whole, I think in 2010 as a reporter, I became a good ‘chaser’. I could get comments on time and sometimes even before the deadline (touchwood!). However, I still rue that I could not get Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s comment for a feature story.

Moreover, the year gone by has also taught me how to handle those furious callers who have objections to my stories. In 2011, I would like to learn some decent but hard-hitting idioms (for example, this is an editorial call, not mine) to counter them. The Niira Radia tapes scam has made us (journalists) cautious about ‘threading along’ our sources for some news, who knows if someone is tapping our calls!

Interestingly, my year ended with me posing some inquisitive questions to one of the most well-known and very senior journalists on his involvement in the Radia tapes case. And believe me, he was perplexed while answering.

And now, I am already set with my long list of resolutions… well planned with deadlines, but I am afraid I might get busy in finding out – How to do it (at least achieve one or two targets)? But as of now, my mood is set for the New Year jamboree with friends.

Finally, wishing you all a very Happy New Year, with the promise to report on some exclusive news in 2011. Cheers.
