7.25% Budget reduction for MIB; Prasar Bharti, PCI, others to bear the load

In the union budget 2018-19, the allocation to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has been reduced by more than 7 percent as compared to the current fiscal year.

The Budget Estimate for 2018-19 is Rs 4088.98 crores and for current fiscal year it is Rs 4409 crores. Although, the allocation this time has been reduced by around 7.25%, it is still 11.8% more than the Revised Estimate for the year 2017-18.

Bureau of Outreach and Communication (BOC), a unit formed by merging the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP), the Directorate of Field Publicity (DFP) and Song and Drama Division (S&DD) has been allotted Rs 174.29 crore, which is around 5.6% lesser than the amount that was sanctioned to the three divisions overall.

The allocation to broadcasting has been reduced to 3090.27 crores as compared to the current fiscal budget which is 3374.70 crores.

Prasar Bharti, the Public Service Broadcaster of the country, has been allocated Rs 2820.56 crores as compared to Rs 2996.70 crores in the fiscal year 2017-18. Even in this case, although the allocation is 5.8% less than the current fiscal year, it is around 10.8% more than the Revised 2017-18 budget which was Rs 2514.37 crores.

For Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, the expenditure has been raised to 31.29 crores as compared to the current 29.22 crores. Similar is the case with Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata, where it has been increased to Rs 16.46 crores as compared to Rs 14.37 crores in the fiscal year 2017-18.

Press Council of India, a statutory body in India that governs the conduct of the print media, has faced reduction in the latest budget allocation of around 2 crores. From 8.54 crores it has been reduced to 6.73 crores.

Indian Institute of Mass Communication, the Indian media centre of learning, funded and promoted by the Government of India, has faced reduction in the latest budget.
