Rajinikanth-Akshay Kumar's 2.0 out on November 29, says director Shankar on Twitter

This Rajinikanth starrer with a whopping budget of Rs 500 crore is shot entirely on 3D cameras

The release date of the much-awaited Indian Sci-Fi movie 2.0 was announced on Wednesday by director S. Shankar through his social media handles. The Rajinikanth- Akshay Kumar starrer will release on November 29, 2018. 

The upcoming Rs 500 crore film is a sequel to the Shankar-Rajini 2010 collaboration Enthiran, becoming perhaps the most expensive Indian film made by far. This Rajini starrer is shot entirely on 3D cameras. 
2.0 made headlines since the day it was announced be it the massive budget, debut of Akshay Kumar in Tamil films, VFX effects to be used and of course, Rajinikanth. There were reports that Arnold Schwarzenegger had agreed to work in 2.0 for a whopping remuneration but finally,  Akshay Kumar was roped in as the antagonist. Amy Jackson plays the female lead in 2.0, which has music by AR Rahman.

2.0 was shot in Tamil and Hindi concurrently and will be dubbed in 13 languages. According to media reports, the satellite rights of the movie was bagged by Zee Network for a whopping Rs 110 crore. Telugu distribution rights of the movie reportedly was bought by Asian Cinemas for Rs 80 crore, which itself is a record amount for a dubbed film in Telugu. Another report says the Hindi version of the movie is sold for Rs 80 crore to AA films.

The film began in 2015 and was scheduled to release during Diwali 2017 but in April 2017 it was announced that the release date has moved to January 25, 2018 citing better incorporation of visual effects in the film. The release date was further moved to April 14, 2018 and then to April 27, 2018. The film has around 11,000 visual effects shots and much to the relief of Rajini-Shankar-Akshay fans,  the final release date was officially announced yesterday.

Rajini’s Collaboration with Shankar 
This is for the third time that Rajini is collaborating with Shankar after Sivaji and Enthiran. According to media reports Enthiran grossed USD 2.56 billion worldwide.
2.0 has another speciality, after 23 years two of Rajinikanth's films are releasing in the same year. Previously it happened in 1995 when Rajini’s Baashha and Muthu were released in the same year, both movies were box office hits. Though in 2014 Lingaa and Kochadaiiyan were released, Kochadaiyyan was a motion capture computer animated movie.

Social Media Reaction to 2.0
Since yesterday, 2.0 has created quite a buzz on social media. The announcement of the release date was welcomed positively by Rajini fans across the world. #2point0 was trending on Twitter and other social media platforms.
The making of 2.0- 3D Featurette videos released on YouTube by Lyca Productions also garnered huge viewership.

From Kabali to 2.0 and now, politics 
Rajini’s last two movies Kabali and Kaala were noted for their political content. Reports suggest that Kaala didn’t collect as much as expected from the box office. The producers of Kaala, Wunderbar Films, brushed away the rumours through a tweet which said: ‘We would like to dispel rumours run in few articles on#Kaala. Contrary to it, #Kaala is a successful and profitable project for Wunderbar Films. 
“2.0 is a double-edged weapon for Rajini," says Rajeev Balakrishnan , Project Lead- PR Communications, WarRoom Strategies.
“Kaala didn’t do well as well as expected at the Box Office, but 2.0 is going to rake in a huge amount at the box office. But he has to be little more careful about the political statements he makes, the incident in Tuticorin is not something we expect from Rajini. People like to see Rajini’s showmanship on screen. Though in his real life he is humble and down earth, the political statements he makes might not go down well with people,” says Balakrishnan.

N Chandramouli, CEO, TRA Research, believes that the 2.0 is going to have a huge opening.
“Re-invention of character is important for Rajini, he has tried to do that with Kaala. But people like to see him as a cult actor for his cult personality and style onscreen. His movies will never impact his political life, but his political statements will impact his movies. His major fan base is formed from people at grass root level, he has to be bit more careful about the political statements he makes,” says Chandramouli.
