Eika and Siddharth Banerjee’s '52 Red Pills' is a must-have book for 2020

It was a book launch and life lessons rolled into one. The essence of Siddharth and Eika Banerjee’s book 52 Red Pills was reflected in the outpouring of support for the couple at the venue of their book launch in Mumbai. Surrounded by friends and family, the couple shared their experience of writing the book, which is aptly described as ‘An Indian couple’s hyper-learning journey of combining ancient wisdom and modern research.”

Typically, one would expect a ‘how to win in the corporate world’ themed book from a power couple but 52 Red Pills is far from it, instead, it deals with finding a balance in our everyday lives, it encourages readers to practise mindfulness, embrace healthy living and serves up tips and tricks to deal with the stress of modern-day living. Perhaps, an antidote for our corporate lifestyles or life in general.

Speaking about her journey of writing the book, Eika said, “There was a one year journey before the book got written, the book is a compilation of all that happened through 2018. The question actually is what made us take that journey, which I think Siddharth should answer,” Adding to which Siddharth said, “This book is essentially 52 weeks of hyper learning that we did across ancient Indian wisdom and modern knowledge to dig out 52 topics, in 52 weeks which have to do with making you healthy, wealthy or wise and therefore help you lead a more satisfying and fulfilling life. That is what this book is all about. When we started this journey and published some part of the learning on social media, it grew and became a movement, we were then extremely excited to share it with the world and that is why 52 Red Pills is out today.”

The book has been designed to be interactive. Instead of having a one-way conversation with the book, readers can engage with each topic through a Q&A, in a note to oneself sort of format.

Elaborating on the timing of the launch Avneet Kaur, Editor, Pan Macmillan said, “We felt this book would make a great New Year’s book because this is the time most of us are planning our resolutions and also because this book started on New Year’s Eve as a result of a conversation between Eika and Siddharth.”

If you are wondering about the title of the book, so were we. Our questions were answered through an informal discussion moderated by Eika’s sister Eishita Chaturvedi. As the ‘insider’, Eishita shared various anecdotes of the couple’s obsession with the book and her first question to them too was about the book’s title. To which Siddharth replied, “Why 52 Red Pills? Very Simple. Have you seen the movie Matrix? There is a classic scene in the movie where Morpheus offers to Neo, the choice of the red pill or the blue pill. The blue pill is your normal daily life and the red pill signifies adventure, a new journey. As they say, its Alice in Wonderland down the rabbit hole, you never know how deep the rabbit hole goes. So, Red Pill is an adventure or a new journey, so we combined that concept with 52 the number, 52 signifying 52 weeks of the year.”

On their collaboration of the book, Eika said, “The origin story is that anybody who knows Siddharth knows how organized and disciplined he is and how I’m not. The journey started because in the last 10 years or so I’ve been doing a lot on ancient wisdom, picking out life hacks and have been sharing them with him randomly. So, he decided that it was time we organized our knowledge and convert it into this exercise of the 52 Red Pills.”

The relaxed demeanour of the couple would have you believe that writing the book has been a walk in the park, but the discussions around their journey reveal, the painstaking details that have gone into collaborating with people, how life lessons from famous people like Fmr. Indian Cricket Captain MS Dhoni, Raw Pressery founder Anuj Rakyan, Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg and Adman Piyush Pandey and many more have been incorporated in the book. All of this was first documented on their social media accounts and their blog before it was turned into a book.
