Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani made some key announcements regarding Reliance Jio’s launch in his address at the 42nd Annual General Meeting of Reliance Industries on Thursday.
Dedicating Reliance Jio to realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a digital India for 1.2 billion Indians, India, which is currently ranked 155th in mobile broadband Internet access among 230 countries, will be among the top 10 with Jio’s launch, he said.
Reliance Industries has officially announced that it will offer services at substantially lower rates than the rivals. Ambani said Reliance Jio will start offering service from September 5 and will be launched commercially on December 31. RIL’s maiden plan will offer data at Rs 50 per GB, which is lowest in the world.
“We Indians have come to appreciate and applaud Gandhigiri; now we can all do Datagiri, which is an opportunity for every Indian to do unlimited good things, with unlimited data,” Ambani told shareholders.
As part of Reliance Jio’s introductory offer, users will have access to unlimited LTE data and national voice, video and messaging services along with the full bouquet of RJio applications and content, free of cost up to December 31. “The era of paying for voice calls is ending. All voice calls for Jio customers will be absolutely free,” Ambani said. “Jio will put an end to voice call charges in India.”
Data services which will remain free until December, will be offered starting at Rs 19 a day for occasional users, Rs 149 a month for low data users and Rs 4,999 a month for heavy data users. RJio filed its tariff plans with the telecom regulator TRAI. It may signal an all-out price war among the telcos.
“The world's demand for Digital oxygen, that is data, is growing explosively. Jio's mission is to meet this exploding need for India, and to take our nation from data shortage to data abundance. And to enable a digital life for a Digital India,” he said.
Ambani also announced the introduction of a lineup of affordable 4G LTE smartphones under its popular LYF brand, starting at Rs 2,999.
More feature-rich models will be available for progressively higher price-points like Rs 3999,Rs 4999 and Rs5,999. Furthermore, for those users who want to hold on to their 2G/3G smartphones or Wi-Fi capable feature phones, it has introduced 4G LTE personal router, called Jio-Fi, for Rs 1,999.
Ambani also announced that the Jio-Apps bouquet worth Rs 15,000 for an annual subscription will be made available complimentary for all active Jio customers until December 31, 2017.For more updates, be socially connected with us on
