Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (VSNL) has registered 84 per cent surge in its Internet subscriber-base 5.4 lakh as of December 31, 2000 compared to the previous year. The company’s Internet user-base stood at 2.94 lakh on December 31, 1999. The achievement of 84 per cent growth is despite of the challenges from private players, according to Amitabh Kumar, director (operations) of VSNL.
Amitabh Kumar said that VSNL has about 50 per cent of the marketshare in India. It plans to add another one-lakh customers over the next two months. The total number of Internet users in the country currently stands at about 12 lakh. The country’s largest Internet Service Provider is also planning to unveil the Net services in Kochi within a couple of weeks.
