SC to hear Father, Son and Holy War case today

Supreme Court will hear the appeal against the telecast of the film, Father, Son and Holy War. The appeal was filed by Doordarshan against a Bombay High Court order directing it to telecast the film on the national network.

Father, Son and Holy War, a documentary film by Anand Patwardhan, deals with the relationship between male dominance and communal violence in India. It was completed in 1994 and submitted for telecast to DD in 1995.

After DD failed to respond for two years, a writ petition was filed in the Bombay High Court seeking directions for the telecast of the film on DD's national network. In February 2001, the Bombay High Court ruled that DD must telecast the film within six weeks.

After the elapse of the six weeks, DD sought more time to comply with the order. The court granted two weeks' time. DD then filed an appeal in the Supreme Court, which is coming up for hearing today.
