Raj TV to take on rivals head on

Raj TV plans to take its competition head on with 3 to 4 daily soaps, five weeklies and a few game shows this December. Raj Television Network (RTN) also plans to give Raj TV a new look and feel through promotions. The channel will also be adopting a few test markets across the State to evaluate viewership patterns.

There are currently 14 channels operating in the Rs 162-crore Tamil television channel market. Sun Network is the undisputed number one, controlling around 50 per cent of the market. Raj TV, with a market share of 30 per cent, has been occupying the number two slots for a long time. However, with KTV's entry, things may not be the same for Raj.

With distribution being controlled by Sun network's Sumangali Cable Vision (SCV), Raj TV has already been pushed one notch down by KTV, in the prime band.

According to industry sources KTV's entry has affected viewership across channels and time bands. In fact, it has eaten even into Sun TV's market.

Raj TV will leverage on movies, which has been its core strength. Despite fierce competition, the channel believes that there is still space for 3 or 4 new players in the market.

Raj network has plans of entering radio as the company has acquired FM radio licence for Chennai.
