Govt keeping a close watch on tech monopoly threat
India is taking steps to guard against the threat of monopolies that may form due the convergence of telecommunications, broadcasting and Internet technologies.
In line with its concerns, the government, which threw open the direct-to-home broadcasting by satellite earlier this month, had put a 20 per cent lid on cable networks' stakes in DTH broadcast firms. Union law minister Arun Jaitley said the government was also working on a law to create a common regulator to cover media and telecommunications.
The legislation, which the government hopes to introduce in Parliament in the session beginning later this month, was along the lines of an amendment to the US telecommunications law made in 1996 and Malaysia's Multimedia Act framed in 1998.For more updates, be socially connected with us on
