Gaon Connection will observe its fourth anniversary with the Swayam Festival, encompassing 1,000 small events across 25 districts, directly reaching a minimum of 7 lakh people over seven days from  December 2 till December 8.

The Swayam Project is Gaon Connection’s outreach programme to create thousands of young rural leaders at the grassroots level to become community journalists, entrepreneurs, and change makers. Our vision is to build the Swayam Project over a period of time into a global case study.

The Swayam Festival shall have targeted reach to higher secondary female and male students, women from Self Help Groups, farmers, college students, Asha health workers, A&Ms, etc. The events shall be held in schools and colleges, at hospital compounds, in community centres etc. They shall have a huge range – from martial arts classes for girls to soil testing for farmers to test drives of motor cycles and tractors sessions with legal exerts on dealing with domestic violence to sampling GEC TV shows and news channel content.

The festival shall have a national TV broadcast partner, a radio partner and a swathe of digital partners. The themes at the festival, around which events will be curated are agriculture, skills development, women’s issues, health and hygiene, Internet/mobile phones, self-protection, entertainment and citizen empowerment.

For a very high level of transparency in measuring the impact, these events shall be beamed through Google Hangout, Facebook Live and Periscope, and live updates shall be done round the clock, like in a cricket match or elections, on our microsite via Whatsapped images, videos and text.

The festival gives yet another dimension to the already humongous reach of Gaon Connection and its partner entites. On radio and digital platforms, the platform reach more than 100 million people every day across All India Radio, Radio City, Red FM, Big FM, Radio Mirchi, Radio Mantra and Saavn app with our hugely successful audio properties – which include storytelling by Neelesh Misra, also the founder of the Gaon Connection rural media enterprise. On TV, the rural media platform executed shows around rural themes on DD National and Aaj Tak that have earned top-notch ratings and millions of viewers.
