Stree Shakti Awards from CARE India

Woman mountaineer Reena Kaushal Dharmshaktu, international paraplegic sports person Deepa Malik, Woman Grandmaster Tania Sachdev and a few unsung rural women heroes who made a difference in the society were among those honoured with ‘Stree Shakti’ Awards by CARE India, as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations.

The awards were presented by well-known poet Dr Anamika on Sunday at Dilli Haat where CARE had organised a two-day extravaganza `Main Shakti Hoon’ (I am Powerful), to celebrate the power of women. CARE, which has been fighting poverty by empowering women for 60 years in India, has selected these women for the awards, in recognition of the outstanding achievements in their respective fields, on the occasion of 100th International Women’s Day.

Hundreds of moms along with their kids walked into the stage for spontaneous `Dance with Mom’ event, giving a festive and inspirational touch to the two-day show that had packed up cultural performances, street plays, photo exhibition, performances by Brothers fusion band and college band, and interactive games, all woven around the theme of power of the changing and empowered women of the country.

Thrilling performance by contemporary fusion band Indian Ocean on Saturday and dance by Sadhya troupe on Sunday were the highlights of the event, attended by thousands of Delhi women along with their dear and near ones over the two days.

Award winner Deepa Malik stole the hearts of all when she recited her own verses, summing up her struggle and determination. “Zindagi tumne langadi bana kar di to kya, isse kursi par ghisatane doongi, main to himmat hoon, apne dhrin-nishchaya se punah bin sahare ke chal loongi,” she said

Braving her life with below chest paralysis and three spinal tumor surgeries {183 stitches between shoulder blades} for past 11 yrs, Deepa is an international sports person and medallist. She is the first paraplegic woman biker and a car rallyist with a difference. She was the first sportswoman to represent the country at international level in her category of disability. Tania Sachdev, holder International Master and Woman Grandmaster titles, became the eighth Indian Woman Grandmaster. She won her first international title when she was just eight.

Reena Kaushal participated in Kaspersky Lab Commonwealth Women’s Antarctic Expedition and became the first Indian woman to Ski 900 kms from the Coast of Antarctica to South Pole. She traversed Changuch glacier, Kafni Glacier and Shallang glacier, crossed two high altitude passes – kafni Col (17500 feet) and Dana Dhura (18350 feet). She is first ascent of Mt. Argan Kangri (6789 meters) in Karakoram range of Ladakh with All India Women Expedition of IMF, July 2003.

Apart from them, CARE also honoured some of the little-known rural women who gave inspiration to the society in different ways, with the support of the CARE. Govinda Amma and Usha of Tamil Nadu, represented a small but powerful revolution that swept the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. In the wake of tsunami, the villagers were found clueless to make living. With the support of CARE, they engaged in crab fattening and cashew processing, and made big money in few years, thus bringing a powerful change to their lives and those around.

Aarti and Agam from Uttar Pradesh, both aged 14, gave inspiration to many girls around by enrolling into the Udaan education programme by CARE and brought many more to the school.

Deepaben and Kamlaben of Kutch Livelihood Education Advancement Programme in western Gujarat have reached out to women in conservative community to educate and help them find livelihood. Kamlaben travelled for the first time in a train to reach Delhi.

Renu Mishra, 26-year-old ASHA from Jagdishpur in Raebareily district, who depicted the clear picture of empowerment, and Chaman Bano, an empowered village pradhan from Ramnagar district of UP were the other winners.
