English newspaper Hitavada hits a century

Hitavada, the oldest English daily in Vidarbha region, is all set to turn 100. The centenary celebrations will be held on February 6, 2011. President Pratibha Patil will be present on the occasion as chief guest.

Hitavada was launched as part of the freedom struggle by freedom fighter Gopal Krishna Gokhale in 1911. Post-Independence, the newspaper continued to flourish. It raised issues of social relevance and significance as it kept growing over the years. It is the only newspaper in central India to be completing its centenary.

“News is sacred and one should not play mischief with it, and we have never used it as a family organ to glorify our personal image,” Banwarilal Purohit, Managing Editor, Hitavada, and a former three-time MP, told PTI.
