Yahoo! initiates UGC contest for advertising professionals

User Generated Content (UGC) is finding its way across all mediums these days. Now Yahoo! has chosen the path and has announced a contest designed to give advertising professionals direct, hands-on experience in UGC. The contest called ‘Big Shot in Cannes’ will go on till May 7, 2007. There will be a special presentation of the winners during the International Advertising Festival in June 2007.

Some of the judges for this contest include industry experts like Piyush Pandey, Executive Chairman and National Creative Director, O&M India; Susan Credle, EVP, Executive Creative Director and Board Member, BBDO NY; Marie Catherine Dupuy, Vice Chairman and Chief Creative Officer, TBWA Chiat Day Paris among others.

The portal has invited members of the advertising community to create online public service announcements that are designed to raise awareness of, and provoke thought and action regarding environmental issues and causes. Some of the potential topics include water conservation, climate change, animal protection, desertification and renewable energy.

“Our goal is to heighten awareness of important environmental issues, while offering advertising professionals an opportunity to gain a better understanding of how people and brands can connect through user generated content,” said Jerry Shereshewsky, Yahoo! Ambassador Plenipotentiary to Madison Avenue. He added, “Yahoo! wants the advertising community to embrace, rather than fear, the explosion in UGC.”

Each of the winners will get a free trip to Cannes, France, coinciding with the International Advertising Festival, which begins June 17, 2007 and the winning entry will be entered into the 2008 Festival along with an iconic Yahoo! Big Idea Chair.
