Reporter’s Diary: Of digital gyaan and the Anna movement...

It has been about two months since I assumed the role of a digital reporter here at exchange4media. Digital has a very wide ranging arena to offer in terms of marketing – from search to display, social to retail and mobile and email. In all these different channels, it offers different ways to marketers to engage with consumers on a one-to-one basis.

As I slowly settle down in my role, I try to meet new people on the job to get to learn more about the fast-evolving digital industry. After a relaxing, long weekend at home, I came back to work this week refreshed to look at the developments in the digital world. I had a few meetings this week with some of the pioneers of the industry from whom I got a lot of insights into the digital world and the workings of it.

I got a chance to meet up with MSN India Head Sanjay Trehan this week to talk about the digital industry in India. I learnt from him how the digital industry has evolved and how it will continue to grow and why it is an important medium for marketers now.

It is quite interesting to note how digital is attracting different kinds of brands into its fold of late. While auto major Maruti increased its spends on digital, a financial company Magma Fincorp also ventured into the arena recently, followed by Teacher’s India. It all does point to a growth and interest in the industry.

In another interesting meeting, I discussed about the growing importance of mobile and social media. Thus the week went off pretty well and gave me a few interesting feature ideas to explore.

Besides the meeting, the week has had the entire nation in the grip of Anna fever, with 24-hour coverage of Anna Hazare and his fight against corruption dominating on all news channels, in fact, all media platforms. Starting right from Independence Day, the coverage on the ‘Gandhian’ protester has been pretty much the only news that has been covered all week. All this is quite reminiscent of the coverage on the protest by Baba Ramdev. Other news events have had to take a backseat to give full focus to this playout between the Government and the swelling ranks of protesters. It will be interesting to see how the issue develops over the next week as well.

In the meanwhile, I look forward to meeting more interesting people from the digital industry and have some thought-provoking conversations!
