Remembering Steve Jobs...

Vivek Bhargava, Managing Director, Communicate 2; Minhaz Lokhandwala, Marketing Director, Novosol and Kartik Iyer, CEO, Happy Creative Services pay their touching tributes to Steve Jobs…

Vivek Bhargava, Managing Director, Communicate 2:
Steve Jobs shall live forever. It is quite ironical that I have spent the last month listening to the “The Steve Jobs way” (audible.com), it was almost like knowing him, feel that like I have lost a mentor that I never met… Last night I heard I couldn’t help watching the “Stanford Commencement” address for the nth time. I sincerely believe if everyone can follow his philosophies, we all will get empowered to change the world.

Here are some of them:
Live everyday as if it is your last – Every day he would remind himself that if today was the last day of his life, would he still do what he was going to do, if the answer was no a few days in a row, he would make a change.
Drive for perfection – I remember the incident where he told the engineers that he does not want a fan inside a Mac… can’t believe other manufacturers still have not been able to create laptops that don’t have a fan.
Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish – I can’t imagine what a person feels when he gets fired from a company he founded. The thing that allowed him to create Next Computers and Pixar was a discovery that he still loved what he did! If you love what you do, you will never have to work another day in your life.

Yes - products like iMac, iPod, iTunes, iPhone, and iPad have changed the way we live our lives, however, Steve Jobs changed the way we think, which is a bigger contribution from him to this world and digital alike. Although Steve Jobs is no more, he will continue to mentor millions of us in changing the world.

Minhaz Lokhandwala, Marketing Director, Novosol:
Steve Jobs’ vision and innovation has impacted three industries – the PC, music and mobile. With regard to the mobile industry, he shifted the balance vis-à-vis the mobile operator for all players, singlehandedly created the mobile apps industry and driven mobile data usage and patterns. These aspects of the mobile industry are still in the early growth phase and, therefore, very open. Thus he leaves the legacy of a huge opportunity for mobile advertising and media companies like Novosol, my company.

Mobile advertising and media are picking up pace, and with 6 billion handphones out there, this is a hunded billion dollar plus opportunity. Success will go to those who have the vision, innovation, tenacity and ruthlessness. All values which Steve Jobs had, and which I have learnt from watching him perform miracles at Apple. For that and the opportunity he has left behind, I thank him from the bottom of my heart. Hats off, Sir!

Kartik Iyer, CEO, Happy Creative Services (India) Pvt Ltd:
When Steve Jobs stepped down as CEO two months ago, I knew that things were not looking good. But I clearly didn’t expect it to happen so soon. I woke up on Thursday morning to see tweets amongst Dussehra greetings, saying ‘Steve Jobs RIP’. Honestly, I thought it was some kind of cheap hoax. I felt bad when Michael Jackson passed away, but Steve Jobs’ passing away had a profound impact on me. I didn’t ever expect to feel so bad, that too about a person whom I only through books, products and campaigns.

Steve Jobs has had a phenomenal effect on my life, considering I have been a fan of music, animation and gadgets. Add to that being from advertising, nearly all campaigns under his watch have been iconic and inspirational along the way. In a single lifetime, he redefined five industries forever. And I have been part of every one of those changes.

According to me he was a wizard. There is no other way to describe him – a wizard who knew how to cast a spell on people. From all the books I have read about the man, he was a stickler for detail and perfection. From his speeches, I gathered he was a master presenter. From his products, I understood the true meaning of joy. From the level of detail in everything he did, one can only nod in agreement to the importance of clarity and cleanliness in design. From the way he led his life, he was a true believer. From all the people who hated him, he taught not to accept mediocrity. From all the people who loved him, he was inspiring in everything he did. And if you want to say it all in two words, he was – Steve Jobs.

Steve Jobs, I believe, controlled everything. Even the things not in his control. Even if you see the way the announcement of his passing away was handled. It was in true Steve Jobs’ fashion. Clean messaging, with no unnecessary details.

How do I feel knowing that he won’t be around? I still can’t believe he isn’t. It will take a while for the whole world to digest, I guess. Because I am sure that we will continue to reel from his art of innovation when the iPhone Pro is launched. He had the audacity to tell the world how 1984 won’t be 1984. But I guess 2011 will never be 2011, either. And this time, he didn’t have to say anything at all.
