No plans to regulate news websites, they must self regulate: Rajyavardhan Rathore

Newly appointed Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Rajyavardhan Rathore said, "The Prime Minister is very clear that the media in our country is one of the very important pillars of democracy and they have to self-regulate."

Taking charge of the ministry, Rathore assured that the government has no plans to regulate news portals and media websites.
Hence it is expected that the ministry will soon dissolve the committee, constituted during Smriti Irani’s tenure, for framing regulations for online media, news portals and online content.
Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had issued an order (dated 4 April, 2018). According to the order, the committee comprised 10 members, including Secretary, I&B-Convenor; Secretary, MeitY; Secretary MHA; Secretary, Dept of Legal Affair; Secretary, DIPP and CEP, MyGov. The committee was also said to have representatives of the Press Council of India, News Broadcasting Association and Indian Broadcasters Federation.
However, when asked about the order, the minister said, “I think you have misunderstood it.”
“It is not us vs them...It is not about two teams. It is about a collective responsibility that media becomes the voice of the people, whether it is Prasar Bharati or private network or channel. We will work in this direction,” said Rathore who also holds the portfolio of Sports.
