Netflix gets aggressive; announces three more Indian originals

Netflix is taking its India game to the next level by announcing three new Indian original series called 'Leila,' 'Ghoul' and 'Crocodile.' Spanning across drama, horror and history, these series will join a larger slate of original productions out of India including 'Sacred Games,' 'Selection Day,' and 'Bard of Blood.'

"We are proud to continue to invest in original content in India. These three series, from the scary to the supernatural, represent the tremendous diversity that Indian storytelling holds for a global audience. We are thrilled to work with some of the world's most talented writers and producers to bring these stories to life for India and the world," said Erik Barmack, Vice President of international original series, Netflix, in a mention on the company's media webpage.

Set in the near future, 'Leila' revolves around Shalini, a free-thinking woman in search of the daughter she lost upon her arrest 16 years earlier. The series is from writer and executive producer Urmi Juvekar, based on the book of the same name by Prayaag Akbar.

'Ghoul' is a horror series based on Arabic folklore featuring popular actors like Radhika Apte and Manav Kaul. Set in a covert detention centre, it has been written and directed by Patrick Graham. Nida, an interrogator who turned in her father as an anti-government activist, comes to the centre to realise that some of the terrorists imprisoned there are not from this world.

The third series, 'Crocodile,' is a young adult murder mystery by Binky Mendez, set in Goa. When her best friend goes missing, the protagonist sets out on her own investigation, uncovering secrets among her friends, romantic relationships and community.

Though the shows will be streamed worldwide, their release date have not been assigned yet. In the previous year, during his visit to India, Barmack mentioned that Netflix was looking at bringing out at least five to six Indian originals a year.

In June Netflix has scheduled its first series 'Sacred Games,' which is based on author Vikram Chandra's novel of the same name. This eight-part series, helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane has popular actors like Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte.
