iZone International: Roundup of Day 3 @ Mobile World Congress

The third day of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) at Barcelona saw a lot less hectic activity than the previous two days, but aside from the awards ceremony, there were keynotes by Intel CEO Paul Otellini, and the heads of Nokia and RIM, Stephen Elop and Jim Balsillie.

The Apple iPhone 4 was named Best Mobile Device at the Global Mobile Awards 2011, because it offered a “great screen, sharp design, fantastic materials, and phenomenal ecosystem for app developers. In a tight race, the iPhone 4 builds on the success of its predecessors to set the pace for smartphones.”

HTC won the award for Device Manufacturer of the Year. The judges praised the Taiwanese company, saying had “built its market presence from nowhere, with fresh branding and marketing and a strong portfolio of devices across many platforms. In particular, it has proven an exceptionally popular and enduring phone manufacturer. With great communication and good customer service, this is a well-deserved award.”

The App of the Year was awarded to Rovio’s hugely popular game ‘Angry Birds’.

Intel CEO Paul Otellini did not have any products to show at the MWC, but he did hint that there would be smartphones based on Intel chips for the first time launching sometime this year. “I don’t want to pre-announce our partners,” he said. “I think it’s going to be pretty exciting.”

Sharing a platform were Stephen Elop, CEO, Nokia, and Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO of RIM, both of whom avoided talking about the threat to their platforms from Android and iOS. Elop instead focussed on the work that Nokia is doing in emerging markets in the developing world, while Balsillie talked a lot about the new Blackberry Playbook tablet.

Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha did confirm long-standing rumours that his Xoom tablet would cost $799 on Verizon Wireless when it launches later this month, while a Wifi-only version will cost $600.
