iZone International: Google releases Annual Zeitgeist; analyse what the world is looking for
Google has just announced its Annual Zeitgeist report of what the world has been searching for, and has as usual offered the data broken down by region, worldwide and even showing trends across the year by comparing these with those searches from 2009.
Chatroulette, iPad and Justin Bieber were the three fastest-rising search terms in 2010, while Twitter came in eighth and Facebook was tenth. Swine flu, New Moon, Susan Boyle and Michael Jackson all trended downwards, on the other hand, while ‘Top Chef’ was the most searched for term related to food. Not only did the iPad rise quickly, but along with the iPhone, held the top slot for searches. The World Cup, Gulf Oil Spill and Haiti earthquake were also extensively searched for, and the Google microsite (link below) allows one to go over this data in a number of ways, to better understand what audiences are searching for.
The top three searches from India, for example, were IRCTC login, Micromax mobile and YouTube videos, in that order. Interestingly, the third most popular search term on Google from India was ‘Google’. Songs topped the list, but Facebook, Nokia and IRCTC were all there as well.
While Nokia was only the eighth most popular search term, as a brand it is the most searched for in India, though as noted above, Micromax searches are growing more quickly. Micromax is the fourth most searched for brand from India, behind Samsung at second place and Airtel at third.
The Zeitgeist is a powerful tool because it reveals a lot of information in a simple format. Interestingly enough, for India, the most popular “how to” search was “how to get pregnant”, which from a country with this big a population really raises questions, while “how to make money” came in at No. 9. Google also listed the fastest rising people searches from India, which contains the expected list of celebrities, Shakira and Lady Gaga being the only people on the list who are not Indians.
