iZone International: Google Doodle placed in the hands of schoolchildren

Kids in the US have the most fun. While we are anticipating 3G, they’re complaining about 4G, and unlike their parents, they aren’t even paying for it. Well, for the fourth time ever, they get to try and do something else that most of us don’t have a shot at – designing the Google doodle that greets you when you visit the famous search engine.

Google has a huge collection of doodles and has used the quirky logo redesigns to celebrate festivals, raise awareness and even help charities, but the kids’ doodle is one of their direct interventions – this is the fourth time that the company is holding the competition, and the winning entries will not only be displayed on the Google home page as the new logo, but will also reward the winners with a scholarship and a technology grant for their school.

The theme of the contest, open only to students in the US, is ‘What I’d Like to do Someday...’ and the winning doodle will earn the creator a $15,000 scholarship, and a $25,000 technology grant to his/her school.

“We know this crop of students will be the generation of tomorrow’s leaders and inventors, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with,” Marissa Mayer, VP - Consumer Products at Google wrote in a blog post.

The registration closes on March 2, 2011 and aside from the grand prize, the top 40 finalists will also win a trip to New York, where their art will be displayed in the Whitney Museum of American art. To learn more, visit Doodle 4 Google – www.google.com/doodle4google/
